Södra and Vida suspend sawmill operations in Sweden as timber shortage drives up prices

Swedish timber industry group Södra will temporarily suspend production at all of its sawmills this winter as a shortage of timber has led to prices rising by as much as 50%. As a result, sawmills are facing difficulties and potential losses.

A similar decision was made not long ago by the sawmill group Vida, which announced earlier in February that it would cease production at all 12 of its sawmills in southern Sweden.

Södra has calculated that the temporary suspension of work ensures efficiency for the company and helps to avoid losses. It is not excluded that other measures will be taken. According to the company's management, the temporary suspension of work has its advantages compared to reducing the volume of work. This time can be used to carry out maintenance of equipment that would otherwise have been done in the summer. In the spring, when the availability of timber improves, work is expected to resume. Employees will also be retained.
